Chimneys should be professionally cleaned and inspected at least once a year to eliminate flammable creosote and debris, as recommended by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) and the Chimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA). If you use your fireplace frequently—three or more times a week—or burn green or unseasoned wood, consider scheduling cleanings twice a year to maintain safety and efficiency.

A chimney requires cleaning if you notice black, flaky creosote deposits thicker than 1/8 inch, experience persistent smoky odors, see smoke filling the room, or find the damper difficult to operate. Additional warning signs include fires that struggle to stay lit, unusual animal noises coming from within, or visible blockages in the chimney.

To prevent creosote buildup in wood stoves, always burn seasoned (dry) hardwood, maintain high fire temperatures, and ensure proper airflow. Key measures include keeping chimney temperatures elevated, conducting daily hot burns, and sweeping the chimney at least twice a year. Additionally, using a moisture meter to check the wood’s moisture content is highly recommended to ensure optimal burning conditions.
